I have disabled most of the features in Google Desktop by choosing the option not to allow it to index my computer during installation. I need to know if there are any risk for just using the features that do not require indexing such as gadgets.

Google Desktop allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary programs via a man-in-the-middle attack that injects JavaScript, a http://www.google.com search IFRAME, and a META HTTP-EQUIV=”refresh” that targets a http://www.google.com search for a local .exe file, which is displayed in the “results stored on your computer” portion of the search results, and when clicked invokes Google Desktop to execute this file.

Make sure you have the newest version of Google Desktop if you are going to use it.. as with any program.. it is wise to have them updating for security patches (windows, antivirus, etc)
Have they fixed it and made it free of vulnerabilities? who knows.. maybe until the next is found…?

You are safe using Google Desktop provided you enabled the privavy option while installation “do not send any information to google”.

Sort of. Google is about as reputable as is possible in this who-needs-the-Bill-of-Rights world.

My Windows 2000 system won’t run it, so naturally I think I don’t really need it.
